Increase in drink problems for over 65s

Figures from the NHS Information Centre have revealed that in London there has been a 163% increase in the number of hospital admissions for alcohol related problems in people over the age of 65.

The rate has been rising more quickly than in any other age group and now only the North East of England has a higher level of admissions in the over 65 age group.

NHS research has suggested that older people are more likely to drink on a daily basis and are more likely to see excessive drinking problems as a taboo subject.

Experts suggest that many older people turn to drink as a result of changes to their lifestyles, such as retirement or bereavement. Boredom and loneliness are also considered to be big factors.

A spokesperson for the Royal College of GPs argued that issues of problem drinking can often be focussd on younger people, as their problems can be more visible. This leads to many older people thinking that services are not designed for them, or that it’s too late to seek help.

London based charity Foundation 66 is one of the few services specifically designed for older people with drink problems. They have reported an increase in the number of people looking for help and revealed that around 40% had never previously accessed an alcohol service.
